MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading frame of the Twelve S rRNA-c) is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene. The peptide has been characterised in preclinical research as a mitochondrial-genome-encoded signalling molecule with reported effects on insulin sensitivity, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway activation, and metabolic homeostasis in cell-culture and animal-model studies.
